Awesome Things My Students Have Done

A while back, I spent a day obsessing over "onomatopoeia".  Because I like to continue my writing obsessions in the classroom, I assigned my 8th graders to create "Sound Poems". Here are a few samples of their work.

White and black cows, sitting in the sun,
"MOO!", say the cows. The day has just begun.
Fat, brown monkeys, swinging in the trees,
"WHOOP!", say the monkeys, they are wild and free.
Thin, striped salamanders running on the rocks,
"SLURP!", goes the salamanders running from the fox.
Red and brown foxes, drinking from the stream.
"WOOF!" goes the foxes, the water is nice and clean.
Big, sleepy koalas, laying in the trees.
"SNORE!" goes the koalas swatting at the bees.
It is a great day at the zoo. ~ Maggie

Splish splash goes the little waves in the pond.
Blub Blub goes the bubbles from the monster at the bottom of it.
Splonk goes the rock, thrown by little Johnny.
Soft thud as it hits the monster at the bottom of the pond.
Boom goes the water as the monster erupts from the bottom.
Crunch goes the bones of little Johnny.
Blub blub as the monster sinks to the bottom of the pond. ~ Zan
**(boys...hahaaa)**

The trains halts to a stop in the station, SCREEEECH!
A lonely man walks out of the train, GRUMBLE.
He seems sad and sick, ACHOOOO.
He slowly lays down on a bench, SNORE.
This old man makes me sad, SNIFF. ~ Gabe

Giggle
We all start to laugh
Boom
as we all get serious
Chuckle
because it's no big deal
Hush
because it's not funny anymore
Screech
as it gets quiet
HAHA
we laugh
Gulp
as the teacher gets mad
Sigh
as she threatens to kick us out of class.
~Austin

SOB
she starts to cry
BOOM
the door slams shut
SNIFF
she pulls herself together
HUSH
her room goes silent
GULP
she tries to recover
SHOUT
her mother asks why she is upset
SIGH
~ Kadyn

The wind goes swoosh that makes trees shrivel.
Crack goes the fallen leaves under my feet.
Hum goes my voice when I wonder how it happens.
Roar goes my jacket when the wind hits it.
Growl goes the dog that attacks me.
Screech goes the eagle that dives to the dog
I sigh when the dog is gone
Once again, the leaves crack under my feet.
~Erick

The Silence of the Night
Outside the rain comes trickling down, like memories running my thoughts, tic-tic-tic each drop joins each heartbeat creating a sad song. BAM! It seems the sky and earth are in an argument, and sky might win. Slowly, rain pats onto my windows sending me to sleep and forget all the things that haunt me. BANG! BANG!, the rain suddenly stops, all is quiet and I am alone with the silence of the night.            ~ Maria.

Sparkle Sparkle goes the rainbow
Tin Tin Tin goes the rain
Giggle go the flowers
Achoo goes the wind
HAHA go the clouds to the sun
as it hides behind the mountains.
SOB. ~Millie

After learning about new weapons in WWI, 10th grade students had to create an advertisement for a weapon.

One of many awesome examples of the cover page for their notebook unit on WWI.
